Pushmeet Kohli, a final year student CS represented NIT Warangal in ACM student contest held in Norfolk Virginia Mar 2003. He was among 15 students chosen throughout the world and only one chosen from India.

Mr Rao V Remala, an Electrical engineering graduate (1966-72) from NIT Warangal and the first Indian employee on the rolls of the software giant Microsoft and the company's 39th employee, has decided to call it a day. His last day in Microsoft was on 21st March 2004. Mr Remala joined Microsoft in 1981 after working at DCM, Computer R&D Centre and then at Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL).

The first convocation of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), formerly the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, was held on March 1 2004. Former director general of the CSIR and noted academic, S K Joshi, will attend as chief guest at the function, while over 100 scientists and academics from all over the country are expected to take part in the first convocation.

According Mr. Tripathy, the World Bank has sanctioned Rs 5.2 crores for the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) as the NIT, Warangal ranked at the top.The funds were meant for upgradation of infrastructure on the campus.

Each of the seven selected departments were granted Rs 3.5 lakhs for upgradation of laboratories besides setting up a centralised computer centre with 300 systems and Internet facility. Every faculty member would be provided with a personal computer and Internet connectivity, a modern telephone exchange with provision of Direct Inward Dialling (DID) system imported from Korea would be in place soon.A central research facility worth Rs 7 crores would also come up on the campus. Mr. Tripathy said the institute was selected to participate in the technical partnership programme with the technical institution of United Kingdom under the British Council and Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) programme.

Sri Namapally Divakar, Electrical Engineering graduate from NIT (REC ) Warangal 1965 was awarded PADMA SRI award for 2004. Sri Divakar joined Defense Electronics lab in 1967 and served at various positions including Director of the lab. He was awarded the prestigious IETE-IRSI Award for 1998- 1999 by IETE. He also got scientist of the year award for the year 2000 from Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee.

A NIT Warangal graduate Dr Nageswara SV Rao is heading a US government-funded project is heading a US government-funded project to design a high-speed computer network capable of carrying massive amounts of science data. Rao, Nagi to his friends and colleagues, did his BE from REC, Warangal, in electronics and telecommunication in 1982. After completing his masters from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, he did his PhD in computer science from the Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, in 1988.

He is currently with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), which has been awarded $4.5 million to design the high-speed network. The prototype system, funded by the Department of Energy's Office of Science, will be called Science UltraNet. The network is expected to operate at 10 gigabits to 40 gigabits, which is about 200,000 to 800,000 times faster than the fastest dial-up connection of 56,000 bits per second.

A 1992 CS graduate Dr Srinidhi Varadarajan has amazed the computing world by putting together the world's third-fastest supercomputer in a record time of three months, and at record low cost of $5.2 million, using off-the-shelf components.

Srinidhi Varadarajan 's' 1100-Apple Mac contraption cranked out more than 10 Teraflops (or trillion calculations per second) to place third behind the top-ranked Japanese Earth Simulator (35.86 TFlops) and the second-placed U.S. Department of Energy's Los Alamos National Laboratory ASCI Q (13.88 TFlops).

Regional Engineering College, Warangal recently upgraded as National Institute of Technology (NIT), a deemed university, will be made an IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Centre in two years.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday after assuming charge as the director of the NIT, Prof Deba Kumar Tripathy said that the Warangal college was included in the list of NITs, which would soon be made into IITs.The Central Government has decided to upgrade five of the 17 selected NITs in the country into IIT centres, he explained adding that it would take two more years for Warangal NIT to get the status of IIT.
